Week 9 Assignment: Citation Mining

Week Nine Assignment

Part One

1. Anderson, T.D. (2006), “Uncertainty in action: observing information seeking within the creative processes of scholarly research”, Information Research, Vol. 12 No. 1, available at: http://InformationR.net/ir/12-1/paper283.html (accessed 24 December 2006).

·      This is a website paper
·      I would copy and paste the html link and look for it that way, or I could use the title to look for it in Search It.
·      I only need to copy and paste the web link referenced in the citation itself.
2. Belkin, N.J. (1980), “Anomalous states of knowledge as a basis for information retrieval”,
Canadian Journal of Information Science, Vol. 5, pp. 133-43.

·      This is an article in a journal, or periodical.
·      Using the Journal title, I will look in Search It, limited to Vancouver, to see if WSU has a subscription to this journal.
·      WSU does have a subscription.
3. Case, D. (2007), Looking for Information: A Survey of Research on Information Seeking, Needs
and Behavior, 2nd ed., Academic Press, Amsterdam.

·      This is a book, because of the publisher.
·      I will look in Search It, limited to Vancouver, to see if WSU has access to the book.
·      Through Springer Link Journals, WSU has access.
4. Chowdhury, G.G. (2004), “Access and usability issues of scholarly electronic publications”,
In Gorman, G.E. and Rowland, F. (Eds), Scholarly Publishing in an Electronic Era. International
Yearbook of Library and Information Management, 2004/2005, Facet Publishing, London,
pp. 77-98.
·      This is a book chapter.
·      I will look in Search It, limited to Vancouver. Since it is a chapter, I would actually look up the book itself.
·      Through EmeraldInsight, WSU has access the the whole book.

Part Two

1. Graham, G. A., Kearsley, A. T., Drolshagen, G., McBride, N., Green, S. F., & Wright, I. P. (2001). Microparticle impacts upon HST solar cells. Advances In Space Research, 28(9), 1341-1346.

·      This is an article or periodical.
·      I would copy and paste the journal title in WSU’s SearchIt to see if we have a subscription to the journal.
·      After doing so, I found that WSU does have a subscription
2. Oh, C., Seo, J., Yang, J., Ahn, H., Mun, J. and Kim, H. (2002). Selective Si interdiffusion into ion implanted GaAs from SiN and its application to GaAs MESFET. Electronics Letters, 38(9), p.432.

·      This is an article in a journal, or periodical.
·      Using the Journal title, I will look in Search It, limited to Vancouver, to see if WSU has a subscription to this journal.
·      WSU does not have a subscription, but says that it is available through the Owen Science and Engineering library. This can only be done by requesting it through ILLiad.

Part Three

At first I thought that this was a monotonous and meticulous assignment, because it seemed to be unnecessarily redundant. But as I kept looking for each of the sources without just googling them I realized the importance of understanding how to access a specific citation and what tools I need to actually do so. If I actually would try and google something, I would most likely have a hard time actually accessing, say a journal. So, this was good practice in when I would analyze whether or not someone uses notable sources.
